Concorde Fujairah Hotel on Cue for International Billiards & Snooker Champs

At the Press Conference this week introducing the Second West Asian Billiards and Snooker Championship (14-20 January 2012), Mohamed Fekry (pictured), General Manager of the Concorde Fujairah Hotel, explained why he was proud that the Concorde was selected as the venue for the international sporting event.

Community Support

Mr. Fekry elaborated, saying:

“Like any business the Concorde needs to be a profitable organization but we are also here to serve and support the community. We have a growing record in hosting events and conferences for community groups and this is a direction we must continue to pursue.”

Popularity of Billiards and Snooker

The General Manager of the Concorde continued:

“I came to know by chance that billiards and snooker [together] is the second most popular game that is played in the UAE, as per the number of participants. This includes not only the top class players who will be coming here to compete on Saturday but ordinary people who play in public rooms of the UAE every night of the week.”

“We want to be involved in enhancing the popularity of this sport through providing an excellent venue for this international competition and a wonderful sporting spectacle for those who will come to watch.”

Spacious Facility

A third reason Fekry gave for his pride at hosting the sporting event was because of his facilities that provide an ideal venue for many major sporting events:

“In addition to the five-star rooms and service we provide for the players and spectators who will stay in our hotel we have the well-known Layalina Ballroom—‘the biggest ballroom on the UAE East Coast’. This is in high demand for social events, weddings and conferences due to its elegant design and its capacity to accommodate over a 1,000 people.”

“The Layalina Ballroom is, as we speak, being furnished with a large number of billiards and snooker tables. In addition, small grandstands are being erected to ensure there is ample room for spectators to get wide and high views of the action on and around every table.”

The Layalina Layout

While the Layalina Ballroom is one huge room the layout (pictured below) is such that it can be divided with moveable partitions to form three separate rooms.

At the Second West Asian Billiards and Snooker Championship at the Concorde Fujairah Hotel the ballroom will be kept as one big room but spectators will be able to move between the three areas. One area will be devoted to billiards, the second to snooker and the third room will be for the players to practice.

More information on the timetable, the players and the competition draw will be posted on Fujairah in Focus as it comes to hand.
